چکیده

So far, solar-like oscillations have been studied using radial velocity and/or light curve variations, which reveal frequencies of the oscillation modes. Line-profile variations, however, are also a valuable diagnostic to characterise radial and non-radial oscillations, including frequencies, amplitudes, the spherical mode wavenumbers (l,m) and the stellar inclination angle. Here we present a line profile analysis of ǫ Ophiuchi, which is a pulsating red giant. The main differences compared to previous line profile analyses done for heat-driven oscillations are the small amplitudes and the predicted short damping and re-excitation times in red giants. Two line diagnostics have been tested to see whether these are sensitive to the small line profile variations present in red giants. In addition, line profiles have been simulated with short damping and re-excitation times and are compared with the observations. This comparison reveals that non-radial modes are detected in the observed line profile variations of ǫ Ophiuchi. This is rather surprising, as theoretical predictions favours the occurrence of radial modes.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Pulsations detected in the line profile variations of red giants Modelling of line moments , line bisector and line shape

Context. So far, red giant oscillations have been studied from radial velocity and/or light curve variations, which reveal frequencies of the oscillation modes. To characterise radial and non-radial oscillations, line profile variations are a valuable diagnostic. Here we present for the first time a line profile analysis of pulsating red giants, taking into account the small line profile variat...

Time resolved spectroscopy of the multiperiodic pulsating subdwarf B star PG 1605 + 072

We present results for the 2m spectroscopic part of the Multi-Site Spectroscopic Telescope campaign, which took place in May/June 2002. In order to perform an asteroseismological analysis on the multiperiodic pulsating subdwarf B star PG 1605+072 we used over 150 hours of time resolved spec-troscopy in order to search for and analyse line profile variations by using phase binning. We succeeded ...

We review the recent impact of microlensing projects on our understanding of pulsating red giant stars. Discussed are red giant stars' pulsation properties (period– luminosity relations, period changes, mode switchings), Red Giant Branch pulsations, metallicity effects and the use of red giant variables to explore galactic structure.

Line profile analysis of the δ Scuti star HD 2724≡BB Phe: mode identification and amplitude variations

The line profile variations of the δ Scuti star HD 2724≡BB Phe were studied on the basis of new 189 high– resolution spectrograms covering 52 hours of observations on a baseline of 8.3 days. By combining these results with those of a previous campaign 13 pulsation modes were identified: 5 of them are both photometric and spectroscopic, 3 are purely spectroscopic and 5 purely photometric. For th...
